When is Loy Krathong 2031 in Thailand?

Loy Krathong ('floating basket') originated in the Sukhothai Kingdom, possibly from Hindu traditions honoring water deities. The festival thanks the goddess of water, Mae Khongkha, and asks forgiveness for water pollution. It dates back over 800 years.

People float decorated krathongs (baskets) on rivers and waterways, each carrying a candle, incense, and flowers. Making a wish while releasing the krathong is traditional. Fireworks, lantern releases, and beauty contests are common. It's considered very romantic.

Loy Krathong falls on the full moon of the 12th Thai lunar month, usually in November. In northern Thailand, Yi Peng lantern festival coincides.
